Designed by Jennie Goforth, this collaborative project allows students to research and write a magazine or journal article, and then lay it out in Adobe InDesign to look like a real-life publication. The example shown is an article for the popular science magazine, Scientific American, but the assignment can be adapted to any magazine or journal that makes sense in your course or discipline. Students are given an InDesign template, which scaffolds their introduction to a professional design tool and gives them a jumping-off point for designing their article. The articles are then compiled (either by the instructor or collaboratively by the students in the class) into an issue of the magazine/journal.
